这本书被看为是新的律法（Torah，妥拉），教导神的子民在等候弥赛亚降临的当儿如何面对眼前的困苦，也就是里面的哀叹诗所有的。而赞美诗则让我们学习去哈利路（赞美），亚（即雅伟，耶和华）。
